Split-Dalmatia County is the largest county in Croatia, covering a total area of 14,106 km² of which 9,566 km² is sea, representing 30.8% of Croatia’s total maritime area. It is a highly developed, dynamic, and maritime-oriented European Mediterranean region distinguished by its competitive economy based on skilled workforce, high quality of life, commitment to sustainable development, fostered through strong partnerships and open communication between stakeholders.
Strategically located at the crossroads of major road, rail, and maritime routes of national and international significance, Split-Dalmatia County has excellent growth potential in all sectors of transport. Its prime geographical position and well-developed coastline have historically supported shipbuilding, one of the most important domestic industries with major shipyards in Split and Trogir. Additionally, the county’s rich marine resources have driven the development of fisheries and the food processing industry, specializing in fish processing and Mediterranean agricultural products such as olive oil, jams, spreads, honey, traditional cakes, and liqueurs.
Parallel to its rise as a premier tourist destination, the county has also experienced significant industrial development, particularly in its business zones. Key industries include auto parts manufacturing and the production of metal and electrical components. The largest employment sectors are retail trade, specialized construction, food production, hospitality, and IT-related services such as programming and consulting.
Tourism in Split-Dalmatia County has seen remarkable growth in recent years. The motorway connecting Split with the continental part of Croatia, including the capital Zagreb, and the south of Dubrovnik (the City of Dubrovnik), alongside increased air traffic and the introduction of numerous low-cost flights, has spurred a surge in (primarily foreign) visitors. This influx has been combined with the extensive investment in hotel construction and the renovation of various accommodation facilities along the coast and on the many islands of Split’s archipelago, including Brač, Šolta, Hvar, and Čiovo.
The Split-Dalmatia County is also emerging as a prominent ICT hub. The rapid expansion of ICT projects and businesses, with over 560 active entities, has been complemented by the development of Digital Dalmatia, a technology hub dedicated to fostering the IT and tech sector. Digital Dalmatia focuses on digital skills training, local startup ecosystem development, and strengthening the local technology community. Its key initiatives include:
1. EDIT COUNTY Educational Center – Promotes programming activities in primary and secondary schools, provides continuous programmer education at the PICS Training Center, and organizes lectures and workshops on new technologies.
2. Pre-Incubation IT Center – Supports student projects and entrepreneurship, offering the PICS@FESB Student Coworking space and a training center for local IT businesses.
3. County IT Center – This facility houses an IT incubator and coworking space with 12 offices, a conference room, and necessary facilities for local IT professionals.
The key activities and key roles of the County technology hub Digital Dalmatia include:
• Digital skills development – Offers training programs ranging from basic programming to advanced topics like artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
• Startup ecosystem support – The Hub remains committed to strengthening both local and regional startup ecosystems. Its objective is to foster the growth of innovative technology companies by creating a supportive business environment, improving access to funding, offering mentorship opportunities, and facilitating connections with investors.
• Technology Community Building – By organizing and collaborating on conferences, meetups, and various industry events, the Hub continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing and uniting the local tech community. Through strategic investments in infrastructure, industry, and technology, Split-Dalmatia County continues to solidify its position as a thriving Mediterranean hub of economic growth and innovation.
